Cost of Pride

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate. - Proverbs 8:13

When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom. - Proverbs 11:2

By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom. -  Proverbs 13:10

In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride, But the lips of the wise will preserve them. - Proverbs 14:3

Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. - Proverbs 16:18

A proud and haughty man - "Scoffer" is his name; He acts with arrogant pride. - Proverbs 21:24

When reading these verses from Proverbs, it's obvious how God feels about pride. There is a difference between the kind of pride that God hates and the kind of pride we feel about a job well done. Pride that comes from self-righteousness is a sin and God hates it because it keeps us from seeking Him. Psalms 10:4 says, "The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts." The proud are so consumed with themselves that they have completely forgotten God. They are so blinded by their pride that they believe that they have no need of God.

Throughout the Bible, we are told about the consequences of pride. Proverbs 16:18 says, " Pride goes before destruction". Satan was cast out of heaven because of pride. He had the selfish idea that he could actually replace God as the ruler of the universe. But Satan will be cast into the lake of fire in the final judgement of God. For those who rise up in defiance against God, there is nothing ahead but disaster. It's time we stop praising ourselves and give praise to the One who deserves all the praise!
