Blessed Are Those Who Are Persecuted for Righteousness' Sake

The Eighth Beatitude
Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
.

Jesus said many times that His followers will be persecuted. Jesus says in Matthew 5:11-12, "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

At first glance, persecution seems horrible. There are many people around the world who are killed simply because they are a Christian. Persecution in the United States obvisiously isn't this bad, but Christians are looked down upon and laughed at in our society. We as Christians must learn to look past the persecution and look toward the rewards for being persecuted. Whenever we are facing persecution for our faith, we must remember Jesus' words "Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven".
